Thank you

Thank you to all who have commented about the death of my Mum.  It is very kind of you and comforting when lifes highs and lows are shared.  The funeral is Jan 4th, Christmas and New Year have put everything behind.  After the funeral we have to start clearing the house, going through probate and then selling the house.  I suppose that is not going to happen quickly.  We survived Christmas but i am still very tired and at the moment i am still just reading journals but not commenting, i will get with it in the new year.

Was sad to read of the deaths in j'land, although i was not surprised at either one, but they were both so young.  It is easier to accept when people go in the right order, i.e. the people at the older end going first, but my condolences go to the families of both.

Happy New year to you all.

Thursday, 20 December 2007

I have not written much lately i have been very busy and tired.  I have been reading journals now and again but haven't been commenting on many.  But unfortunately my Mum took ill on Saturday and died Tuesday so now i am in the throes of funeral arrangements as well as christmas.  It will probably be the new year before i get back to normal after the funeral January 4th, although then we start with probate and selling her house, but never mind it comes to us all.  She was 83 and had a bad heart for years so every day was a bonus, she had been on borrowed time for awhile.  She had gone blind in one eye and the other one was going fast as was her short term memory, i think this was her time to go and it was peaceful.

In case i don't get a chance, happy christmas and new year to you all.

Holidays

Well it is the start of our winter week's holiday.  I have yet again a cold and husband well!!!

Yesterday we decided to wrap some christmas presents, hubby went upstairs to get the wrapping paper from the cupboard.  He got two bag loads and then thought we might need more so leant forward to reach another bag.  Needless to say he was stretching over something on the floor instead of moving it first.  So he lost his balance and with no hand to save himself fell forward onto the edge of the shelf and headbutted it. He now has a cut across the bridge of his nose and he thinks it might be broke.  I think it is just a  bit swollen and bruised.  He put a small bag of frozen veg on it while watching TV and it didn't look so bad after that.

So here we go, me with a dripping nose and him with a swollen cut hooter looking like i gave him a good beating LOL!

We was going to use this time to finish the christmas shopping and get things wrapped.  At the end of the week we are going away for a few days with some church friends to a Worship Leaders seminar.  Was hoping for lots of singing but now i will have to settle for croaking. :-)

We have hit the birthday season in our family, from the end of October through till January i have 11 birthdays and i entirely blame the dark cold nights of early spring for it.  After all once 'X FACTOR', 'STRICTLY COME DANCING', 'I'M A CELEBRITY, GET ME OUT OF HERE' is finished what else is there to do. :-)

Well i am off to have a good blow and i'm having a lazy day today until church tonight for which i suppose i will have to get out of my nightie and into something appropriate.

Today

Well just tried to put in a picture and AOL was having none of it.  So i have given up!!

Today is my birthday 56years.  That's a 5 and a 6 not a 6 and a 5 as my dear hubby keeps saying.  If that was the case he would be my toy boy LOL!

I don't look forward to them as much as i used to as it means my bus pass is coming ever nearer.  My body feels distinctly older but inside i feel the same as i did years ago, just a bit wiser and more confidence.  I'll talk to anyone anywhere, even myself if no one will listen.

What have i done today that is special.  Nothing, gone to work as usual, had my Friday fish and chips as usual and tomorrow it will all be over for another year.  But it has not been a bad day, just a same as every other day.  My friend bought me some hemorrhiod cream and suppositories for a present.  She is a very kind lady and always knows just what i need.  I have some lovely flowers and chocolates to eat.

Tomorrow will be better because i will have a whole year before i get any older.

Who am i trying to fool. LOL!!

Halloween

Well it's happened again, we have had our car egged due to the Halloween season and yes it has marked the roof, but this time we are going to ignore it because we cannot go through all that rigmarole again.

Trick or treating is relatively new to the UK and whilst it may be fun for some for others it is a source of fear and intimidation.  Lots of elderly people will be hiding in their houses frightened to open the door for fear of what might happen to them.  Young children go with a parent and if someone says no they just leave.  But there are the older ones who go out on their own knocking at strangers houses and demanding money.  Notwithstanding the risk to themselves knocking on peoples doors who they do not know, but also imagine the horror when the elderly (or any age) come out the next morning to see everything covered in eggs and flour which they then have to try and clean before the eggs bite through the paintwork.

The head of one school has recognised the dangers of Halloween and will have nothing to do with it.  She rightly says that it is basically a commercial enterprise with little relevance to faith and has a dark side which is unhealthy.

In other places in the country the attention has been drawn to its 'anti-social effects' and police, churches and schools are trying to take the fear out of 'trick or treat' and to protect the vulnerable and elderly from what is rightly called vandalism.

Trying to make Halloween (All Saints Eve) into a safer and more wholesome night is gaining popularity.  Churches are organising parties that will be far more fun than trick or treating to encourage the children off the streets.  Shops are being encouraged to display some lighter things in their Halloween section not just monsters and ghouls.  It seems that Sainsbury's and Asda have taken this on board and are including face paints, glow sticks and other non-witchy items this year.

I do not wish to offend anyone who goes out with their kids and has a bit of fun and wouldn't hurt a fly, so let me explain why i and most christians in the UK (not sure how many other countries 'trick or treat') will have nothing to do with it and tries where possible without offending to discourge it.

Apart from the damage and fear aspect mentioned above, Halloween (as it is seen today) is of the occult and does have a dark side.  There are real witches about and especially in the UK.  Some just play at it and some are the real deal. It is one of the fasting growing - i loosely say 'faiths' - in the UK today.  It is pushed at the children from every side, books, films, TV, Harry Potter.  It is made to look fun and adventureous.  Nearly every High Street has a shop selling witchcraft books and parafanalia.  It is portrayed as harmless.

Without going into detail, does it work?  You bet it does if you are into the real thing.  To have power is a big draw, think about it. Is there any good witchcraft?  I am sure there are some lovely people around that consider themselves witches who would never harm anyone, but and a big but anything that seeks to control, manipulate, have power over another even if it is for a good reason has to be wrong.

There is a lot more i could say but won't here.  So i feel anything that gives the children the impression that witchcraft is just a bit of fun and would encourage them to get involved or delve deeper when they are older must be discouraged at all costs.  Children look to adults for their lead we must be careful what message we give.

Happy All Saint's Eve

Pooter, B'day

The lead on my computer broke last week so i had to get a new one.  i was most thankful that it was the lead and not the actual laptop.  I tried getting into AOL with my desktop but that is not broadband and everything was so slow i got too frustrated.

Now can anyone tell me this, why when i get AOL up on my desktop pooter (Supanet is my provider) is the home page and everything about it completely different to my AOL on my laptop (Which is my provider)????????

Woke up yesterday with my right eyelid swollen up with fluid.  It has gone down a bit but not completely.  It is worse in the morning and just aches a bit but does not hurt.  My daughter's eye is the same but hers really hurts her and keeps coming up, usually when she is stressed, (it's school holidays)!

G'son was 8 Thursday and had a good day and the day before g'son, g'daughter and daughter went to see the 'Lion King' up London.  They really enjoyed it as i knew they would as i have seen it a few years ago.  They went with ADDUP my g'son's ADHD support group who heavily subsidised it which made it affordable for my daughter, seats in London's theatres being the price they are.  One of the bonuses of going somewhere with the club is that all the kids are in the same boat so Mums do not worry they are being looked at and judged when the kids do not behave like little angels.  They always include siblings with any activity as they recognise that they are as much involved in the family problems when there is someone with ADHD in the family.  They welcome g'daughter to all the ADDUP activities with open arms and she always enjoys herself when she goes.

My beautiful daughter and g'daughter, My blondie.  She takes after her Dad as we are all dark hair brown eyes on my side of the family.  She hates having her photo taken so it is hard to get one on her own.

Not done so well with the photo it won't shrink to the size i want it to like the other one.  I have just started using photobucket i suppose i will get the hang of it.

Well this is hubby, daughter, g'daughter and uncooperative g'son outside our holiday cottage.

Thanks to Kathy for telling me about photobucket, i am sure i will get better at it.  But i think i am going to quit while i am ahead for now.

Me and mine

My gorgeous handsome son.  He has two stepsons of 19 and nearly 18, twin sons of 16 and a daughter of 14.

Three things about me....

I really like moths.  The bigger the better, especially the big furry Hawk moths.  I actually prefer them to butterflies, probably because they sit still a lot longer so you can look at them properly.

I like any song with the word 'Georgia' in. Rainy Day in Georgia, Georgia On My Mind etc.  I cannot even begin to understand why.

I have not put shampoo on my hair for about 18 months.  I just rinse it every other day or so with warm water and a good rub of the scalp. My scalp now NO longer itches. My hair has stopped falling out as much and has thickened up (it was starting to go a  bit thin on top). It is now No longer greasy at the roots and dry and brittle at the ends.  It is now thick, shiny, soft and in good condition.

Holiday photos

Well it's been awhile, i switched everything off and went on holiday and have been busy ever since. I found i had been reading so many alerts that i had no time for anything else. I have decided that i am going to have to be strict with myself and ration my blog reading.  I have had a chance to read a few books in the last two months, something i have really missed.

Holiday weather was blah! We mostly did things for the kids, no sitting on the beach relaxing, LOL!  One day was so wet we just stayed in the cottage all day.  But it could have been worse.

Hubby has had vertigo for weeks now due to the change of weather, there is nothing he can do but wait for it to go.  He gets it every year.

G'daughter has started secondary school and has been getting on OK.  She has been voted the girl form captain for her class and is now a seconder at Guides.  She spends all her time and weekends doing her homework though!

I have included some holiday photos with this post but due to the weather most of them are quite dark.

Holiday

I have switched off alerts i am off on my holidays tomorrow.  Daughter and g'kids coming as well.  Son, d'in law and other g'kids have gone up north to d'in law's nan's funeral.  We are going to Norfolk staying in a cottage, so i hope the weather is kind to us.

All last week was spent running around trying to buy a car for daughter, we have got her a Skoda Fabia like ours but a car not estate and of course diesel.  So this will give it a real test driving to Norfolk.

G'daughter stayed for a couple of nights and came to work with me as i was by myself in the shop, my normal helper was at a conference with the boss helping him to sell books.  :-(  We shouldn't be all alone in the shop but that's another story.

Thursday me and g'daughter went on a little shopping spree and then went and had a nice tea in a local restaurant.  Shame g'dad had to go to bed early for late shift, lol!!

I haven't packed yet, lost my get up and go but i will do it all in a spurt tomorrow.  Spent most of the week worrying if we had bought the right car for daughter, always a worry when it is not new.  Daughter was worrying as well as she will be paying us back.  Do you remember the film 'Christine' about a car that took over the owners life and tried to kill him when he wanted to get rid of the car.  Well, my daughter was dreaming her old car was Christine and upset about her getting rid of it.  So this car took her to the edge of a cliff and pushed her off.  This was when she fell out of bed, she had turned herself completely around in bed and landed on some ironing on the floor beside the bed so didn't hurt herself but she feels very quilty about trying to sell her old car, it has been good to her.

Every now and again i think of something i might want to take and put it in a little pile in the dining room.  I am sure there is an easier way of doing it???

Oh well this won't do i must think and make a list or else something important will be missed.

Be back soon.

Painting by numbers badly

Last summer we bought a new car.  On halloween whilst my hubby was on his way to work about 11.30pm, 8 lads jumped out and threw eggs at the car.  Apart from the danger and egg on the window blocking his view the eggs damaged the paintwork on the bonnet.  You could see where the eggs had skimmed across.

He thought what the heck he might as well get it seen to through the insurance.

We had to put it into the paintwork shop that the insurance people chose.

The first time it went in for a bonnet re-spray, they sprayed the bonnet and a wing??  Then they sprayed the boot as they had scratched it whilst looking in there.  Why they were looking we don't know.

So that was one bonnet, one wing, one boot.

They hadn't done the bonnet right you could see a patch different from the rest.  The insurance asseser would not accept it and said it had to be done again.

Back it went for the bonnet to be re-sprayed.  This time it came back with the bonnet and both wings having been re-sprayed, but minus the badges that had been on the side to tell you that the car had been an 'elegance' fabia.  These badges we found inside the door-well.

So now we had had one bonnet, two wings and a boot re-sprayed.

Again it was wrong, the wing had the same mark as the bonnet had had and a run mark.

Back again, It went in Friday supposedly straight into the body workshop and would be ready maybe that day.  Monday we was told it would be ready Tuesday.  Tuesday (today) we was told it would be ready tomorrow about 3pm.  Oh, and we have sprayed the door as well to blend the colour in with the wing.

What!! It only went in for the wing to be redone.

So that makes now...One bonnet, two wings, one boot, one door.

They might just as well have given it a complete re-spray.

Hubby is not holding out a lot of hope of it being right this time (the door, why???).

Also this will put our insurance up even though we have a protected no claims.  We keep the no claims but the basic premium will go up next year.

We only had it done in the first place because we thought we might change it after a year or two and wanted to get the most part-exchange for it.

You wouldn't believe eggs could cause such a problem, although to be fair they had gone through a few layers of paint.

So if you hear screams over the south of England tomorrow you will know why.

This and that

Think i have been overdoing it and burning too much of the midnight oil, i caught my second cold in the last few months and after not having had one in the last couple of years.

Summer came for a few days and now they are saying that might have been it for this year.  What!! i haven't had my summer holiday yet.  Come back sun.

G'son came round today and got all his golden locks cut off.  He now has a little bit of blond fuzz on the top of his head.  I must admit that is how i like it.  Not such a big chance of catching nits that way.

G'daughter seemed to have swallowed a cup full of cheek before she came so i wasn't so happy with her.  It's a hard age 11 1/2.

We have a new minister about to start at church on 1st Sept.  We have been without one for a year and the one before was ill for the whole of the 5 years she was with us and then left suddenly so we are hoping that things will get back to normal, we have had a hard 6 years.

We are trying to find a new car for my daughter, not easy when none of us are car experts.  We are looking for a Skoda Fabia diesel, a car we know about as we are on our second and hubby is involved with delivering Skoda spare parts so we know not much goes wrong with them.  But because they are so reliable not many come up for sale and when they do we ask ourselves why.  Can't win can we.

Well i said this was a this and that post i haven't done much other than gone to work and nursed my cold.  Ah well, it is preferable to drama.

Sleep overs

Last night g'daughter slept over her friends as she was going with her and her Mum to the Science Museum.  So g'son decided he would have a sleep over as well.

He got his furry blanket, quilt and pillow and put it in the bath and slept in the bath all night. That was his sleep over!!!!

Grandchildren

I have never put pictures of family on the web before but being as they have their own websites full of pictures of themselves it seemed silly not to.  So i asked their Mum's permission and she said yes, so here they are.

This is the granddaughter who writes occassionally on here, first looking like she is thinking!!!  Then at her school.  She has just finished Junior school and will be starting Seniors in September.  Times flies, the next five years will go so fast.

The pictures of my G'son are taken this year at the start of the Gumball Rally in London.  These type of sports car are his life.  He knows everything about all of them.  He draws them, makes them with his leggo and wants to be a car designer when he gets big.  If he applies himself he could do it.  When he has an idea for something he can expalin to you exactly how he wants it made down to the last detail, he just doesn't have the knowledge yet to put it together, but he is only seven and a half, g'daughter is eleven and a half.  Oh and his other passion is drumming, he is having lessons and his tutor says he is good if only he can slow him down enough to learn the basics first LOL!  He does have ADHD though and his meds haven't quite kicked in when he has his lesson but he has no other time slots yet.

G'daughter has found she has a sweet voice and has sung at her Guides 'do' recently and for the school (for charity) in our local theatre's foyer.  My friend is going to give her a few singing lessons and take her through her grade one exam (she is really a piano teacher but can get her started).

So there you are, i present my two youngest g'kid's. I have another 5 so i will see if i can get them on here too.

My old oak tree

Squirrel was slowly walking along a branch of my oak tree trying to keep as flat to the branch as only a squirrel can.  At the other end of the branch sat Maggie, watching, waiting.  Three quarters of the way along squirrel ran at Maggie as fast as he could, making Maggie fly, but only with an air of 'couldn't care less' two branches higher.  Squirrel thinking he had shown who was boss turned and slowly walked back down the branch head held high.

Famous five

Thanks to Amy for choosing me as one of her five 'Rocking Girl Bloggers', now i have to choose five, problem being that nearly all the ones i would choose have already been tagged.  So i will just choose some of the good ones i read regularly regardless of their being tagged before and my apologies to any that have been left out.

In no particular order.

First is Angie at http://journals.aol.co.uk/faveanti/canyouallhearmeattheback/ she never fails to make me laugh.

Next Kathy at http://journals.aol.co.uk/astoriasand/MYSIMPLERHYMES  I love her rhymes and sense of humour and kind comments.

Third Ma at http://journals.aol.com/marainey1/GoodMorningSunshine/ she always comes up with wise positive words.

Fourth http://journals.aol.com/lifesabench6/Noappologies-Biblicalperspect/ sorry i don't know your name.  I have thoroughly enjoyed reading about her childhood and her bible perspectives as they related to today's world.

Number five is Joni http://journals.aol.com/jonibooks1991/jonis-life-now/ i have only just found this blog but loved her entry about the deer born in her garden.

Bea is my final one, i love her openness, integrity and honesty in her journal.  Her love of imparting knowledge and her enabling qualites shine through.  You will find her at http://journals.aol.com/bgilmore725/Wanderer/

There are plenty others i read that are really good as well but i had to choose five.

The Big Crunch!!!

We were told in the west that now we have science we no longer need God and anyway we know how it all began.... The Big Bang!

Only one problem, people were asking, 'but what came before the Big Bang'.  First of all the scientists said, 'well, nothing', but it became obvious that that answer wouldn't do.

But now they think they have the answer...  The Big Crunch.  Yes, that's right, the Big Crunch.  Remember what we was taught, that 'nothing made everything for no reason', with one Big Bang all time and space was created.  Well now they say that our universe was created from the shattered remains of an older universe.

We are told that the previous universe was similar to ours but collapsed in on itself and they named this The Big Crunch.  This new theory is called 'The Big Bounce'.

This has all come about it seems because mathematicians have been unable to show how a universe was created from nothing, but a team from the US believes it has solved part of the puzzle.  Researchers we are told have created a mathematical model using a new theory called Loop Quantum Gravity.  The theory is supposed to combine Einstein's Theory of General Relativity with new ideas about quantum physics, but we are told it is almost impossible to understand without a crash course in advanced physics.

We say 'science has prooved', right until the next theory comes along.  Now don't get me wrong, science and scientists have done wonders for our world and health.  It also has to be said that it has done a lot of harm in the wrong hands.  But some science is not absolute.  It is only good till the next 'breakthrough' comes along.

Now this new theory may be true but forgive me for mentioning it, but what was there then before The Big Bounce, or are we still to believe, 'that nothing made everything for no reason'.

Bits and Bobs

Realised it has been a long time since i wrote anything.  I usually spend so long reading my alerts i am too tired to write, so tonight i am writing first.

I don't know why some have an alert for me posting yesterday cos i wrote nothing but i suspect AOL will have had something to do with it.

Some people have asked how come i got a free room at the B&B.  This is where things have a different meaning across the pond.  By free i meant the room was empty (vacant) and avaible for the dates i wanted, unfortunately i still had to pay.

And yes i have been to the B&B and she seemed like a normal women of about my age so i mentioned how she must have thought me peculiar on the phone with my questions.  Bless her she said she didn't really remember but totally understood as she had a similar problem (menapausal).

Someone was paying me back cos as we drove off on the start of our break i could feel the beginnings of a sore throat.  By the time we got there i was in the throes of a bad cold complete with pounding head.  I very rarely get a cold and i was cross.  The next day i dragged myself round Ely and then back to the B&B and laid down for a sleep.  We then went to dinner and i felt dreadful.  We got back to the B&B about 8pm and i went to bed and for the next 3 hours had a raging temperature and then it went as quick as it came.

The next day we were supposed to go to Cambridge but i felt too wiped out for that and anyway Kings College grounds were shut for exams, so we just went round somewhere closer and smaller.

The next day we came home and by the evening my daughter phoned asking if we could look after my g'daughter while she took my g'son to A&E.  In a row with a friend, his friend had hit him round the ankle twice with a cricket bat and in trying to get away he had twisted his ankle as well.  That eveing A&E was full of kids withbroken limbs and it was 3am before my daughter got back.  Thankfully g'son had just bad bruising and twisted ankle but he still had to be on crutches for two weeks.  It is still sore but he is now running around again.  But for us this meant another day of our break had been taken up as we was very tired for the next few days.

Then it was time to go back to work and that was the end of that weeks holiday.

Thursday i am going to listen to my g'daughter sing a solo for the guide commissioner at her guides open day and last sunday i became a great grandmother.  I AM TOO YOUNG.

But i thank God for the safe delivery of a new baby boy.

Madness

Ever wished you could start again and pick your words more carefully.

The other day i made a phone call to a 'bed and breakfast' to make a  booking for a short break we will be having.  I had the pictures of the bedrooms up on pooter screen.  The lady answered - why do they always have a posh voice - and said that all the rooms were free, which one would i like.  That was when the mouth started working without the brain.

Would i like the twin room?  Well says i, the beds look too far away to be able to poke my husband if he snores.  A short silence, and then, no.... you wouldn't be able to poke him but you could always push the beds together.  I said no that would be alright.  The other room, i said, is the bed on wheels, (it was a double bed with head and base board and room for someone to hide under).  No she said, but there is something to pull out from underneath (single bed perhaps).  Oh, says i, only i thought if it had wheels on (could not for the life of me remember the word casters) and i jumped on it it might shoot across the room with me.  Again a silence.  No, no wheels, my bed has wheels but i have a box at the bottom of the bed to stop it moving.  She said.

All this time i am screaming to myself, shut up you idiot what's the matter with you and trying not to dissolve into hysterical giggles.  She then went on to say, it does have a base board so if you are tall it might be a problem.

So what was my reply,  Neither myself or my husband suffer from height.

By then i was just groaning inwardly to myself and could not get off the phone quick enough.

I have booked the double bed for the vertically challenged with the assurance it will not scoot across the room when jumped upon for it has no wheels.

I now just have to face the women when we go.  Do i pretend that it was my normal way of behaving, or make a joke and apologise that i was having a mad moment??

Grandson's antics

My youngest g'son went to the loo at school, while in there he noticed spots on his tummy and thinking he had a rash in his panic ran to the teacher to tell her.  The class erupted in laughter, in his haste he still had his trousers and pants around his ankles.  The teacher screamed at him to get back in there and pull them up.  He went back, wiped his rear and pulled up his clothes and then went to the teacher to show her his suspected rash.  He is 7 yrs.

The other week, again my g'son, his teacher called for mum and told her his wind was disrupting the class, could she please stop giving him beans every day. Thats what g'son had told her.  My daughter assured the teacher he did not have beans every day, but that he had had a bit of a funny tummy that week, something we could all attest to as we had all had occassion to shout at him to get out as we opened windows and made lavish use of the air spray.

My daughter said, 'oh the embarressment, how many other mums get called in to school to be told off about their child's wind'.

The Knocker Upper

Before the time of alarms to get you up for work, in the mining or mill towns and villages people were employed to go round houses to knock on your door and get you out of bed ready for work.  The knocker uppers.   This is a story of a knocker upper and a theft.  Who did it?

Nicholas Knox, of Nottingham

Nicholas Knox – commonly known as Nick Knox – was employed at the shop of a knick-knack dealer in Nottingham named Nathan Knight, who was known amongst his friends as Nat Knight.  Now as Nick Knox had to be up early at Nat Knight’s he engaged a knocker-up named Nicodemus Noakes, to knock him up.  Nicodemus Noakes, familiarly known as Nicky Noakes, knowing that knocking up required a knack, engaged another knocker-up who happened to be knock-kneed, to knock him up, so that being knocked up, he could knock up Nick Knox.

Well, it happened that one morning the knock-kneed knocker-up, not knowing the time did not knock up Nicky Noakes, and Nicky Noakes, not being knocked up by the knock-kneed knocker-up, failed to knock up Nick Knox, so that Nick Knox, not being knocked up, was not at Nat Knight’s in time; thereupon Nat Knight knocked off some of the wages of Nick Knox, and Nick Knox next got even by nicking some of the knick-knacks belonging to Nat Knight.  In addition to this, Nick Knox nagged Nicky Noakes for not knocking him up, and Nicky Noakes retaliated by knocking the knock-kneed knocker-up down, and the knocker-up who was knock kneed, being knocked down, felt knocked up.

Some people said that no knick-knacks had been nicked from Nat Knight’s; others could not say whether Nick Knox had nicked knick-knacks from Nat Knight, or Nicky Noakes had nicked the knick-knacks from Nick Knox, or whether the knock kneed knocker-up had knocked at the knocker of Nat Knight’s and next nicked his knick-knacks.  But it was proved that knick-knacks had been nicked from Nat Knight, either by Nick Knox or by the knock-kneed knocker-up who never knocked up Nicky Noakes, the Nottingham knocker-up.  The matter was taken before a magistrate.

Of course Nick Knox said that not having the knack, he had not nicked Nat Knight’s knick-knacks, and Nicky Noakes said that he had nicked nix from Nick Knox, and the Nottingham knock-kneed knocker-up next said that he had not nicked never no knick- knacks neither from Nat Knight, Nick Knox, nor Nicky Noakes; so the puzzle was to find out how Nat Knight’s knick-knacks had been nicked.

The magistrate said it was not for the jury to decide whether Nick Knox was as much to blame as Nicky Noakes, or whether Nicky Noakes was as bad as the knock-kneed knocker-up; the question was – had Noakes nicked?  Or had Nick Knox nicked?  Or were the knick-knacks nicked by the knock-kneed knocker-up?  He would state the case clearly and lucidly – it was simply that the knock-kneed knocker-up had not knocked up Nicky Noakes, and the said Nicky Noakes, not being knocked up by the knock-kneed knocker-up, had failed to knock up Nick Knox, so that Nick Knox did not knock at the knocker of Nat Knight, the Nottingham knick knack dealer, in time; and next it was found that knick-knacks had been nicked from Nat Knight either by Nick Knox, Nicky Noakes or the knock-kneed knocker-up who had not knocked Nicky Noakes up.

The jury, finding the matter so simple, came at once to an arrangement which suited all parties, and so now the knock-kneed knocker-up has acquired the knack of knocking up Nicky Noakes, who in his turn knocks up Nick Knox, and Nick Knox next knocks at the knocker of Nat Knight, the Nottingham knick-knack dealer, in good time every morning.

Mission

Well our two week mission is now finished although it turned out to be more a week and a half.  We finished on Saturday with a line dance :-)  The caller was very good and funny but did i ache the next day.  I am not built for or fit enough for movement of that kind.  Once again a short telling of the Gospel and a testimony was given during the break.  All my fears of no one turning up never materialised and there was a lot of fun and laughter, in fact i had to call last dance as some people wanted to go on and on.  The caller had said to to give him what we wanted as far as money was concerned but it was only on the night i found out he gave it all to charity and kept none for himself.  He also does quiz nights so i will remember that for the future.

All in all i think it was worth doing, perhaps not the most professional of missions but we did what we set out to do and that was tell people about Jesus while having a bit of fun.

On a different note, i want to know where this year has gone,  who took it?  We are nearly at the middle of the year and it has gone too fast.  I am looking for somewhere to go away for a few days soon and this is only the spring holiday i am getting around to.  I thought we might stay somewhere near Ely and go and see the cathedral and perhaps Cambridge, but finding somewhere to stay is the problem.  It takes such a time to look on the net, but also my daughter,s car is making noises so perhaps i had better wait till we see what is wrong with that first and how much it will cost!

Think that's it for tonight, i'm watching the snooker final, it's been a tough game for Higgins and it still isn't clear who is going to win, i hope it doesn't go on to the small wee hours as i have work tomorrow.

Bye for now.

What!!!

Friday at work we got a phone call.  The lady on the other end said she was phoning from Manhatten and wanted to speak to Darren.  I said there was no Darren but only a Colin.  She went on to say she was responding to a message left with her to ring back.  Now being as we do sometimes get stuff from the US i went to get the manager and told it was a lady from Manhatten on the phone.

She answered it and started laughing, the lady she said was from Lion Hudson (a publishing house) and wanted Doreen (the manager).  So much for my hearing, but she did have an accent.

I have had this problem before, 'The Greatest Love of All' (song), i heard as, the greatest navaho, till told different and 'Ghost Busters' i heard as Cock Fosters.

Don't even ask.

What have i been up to

The last few weeks have been particularly busy but rewarding, however life has a way of having its little joke and piling on more things for you to do just to keep you on the wrong side of stress.  Nevertheless even with all the pressure, when the nurse took my blood pressure last week it was lower than it had been for years  :-)

So what have i been up to.  Well with a few friends i have been trying to organise a mission in our church and over the last weeks getting flyers, posters etc. printed and out.  The time has now arrived and we have started.  The first thing we did was a social games night inviting church groups but also people who hire the halls and have nothing to do with the church.  The idea was to do a 'God slot' during the break and also to invite people to the next week's events.  Nobody wanted to do it and on the night there still was no takers.  People wanted to have a mission but no one was prepared to do the scary stuff.  I understood that because i had been on missions before and never volunteered to stand up and speak.  Too chicken :-)

This time was different, we couldn't have just a games night and miss the whole point of the evening, so i did it.  Thankfully i didn't have time to think about it as i was busy having a good time playing.  The others have blown it though because sharing the 'Good News' with a bunch of people was so satisfying i doubt if i will let them get their hands on the job now.  LOL!

Next week we start again with more events and then we will be doing a 10 week Alpha course.  This is a course where we share what christianity is about, starting with a meal, a talk on DVD and then get into groups for a chat.  This course has been done around the world and has been particulary successful in prisons.

Mum is slowly getting over her bag being taken.  She went to her club for 2 weeks and instead of going shopping hubby picked her up and took her home.  Then she ran out of food so hubby took her shopping telling her she had a time limit though as she can be hours and i mean hours going round looking at everything twice.  I think 5 hours has beenthe longest.  Towards the end you start to lose the will to live and if an alien came to beam you up you would go willingly.  But she did as she was told (hubby had to get home by a certain time).  Then this last week she plucked up courage and went on her own.  As she only goes out one day a week if this stopped it would mean being confined to the house and getting no exercise at all.  Thankfully hubby works nights so he is available during the day to do things for her as me and my sister both work.

Well bed is calling.  I must try to not leave it so long before writing next time.

Pentecost

Someone has asked me what Pentecost is so i thought i would answer in a post for anyone else who doesn't know.  It got a bit like a bible study but never mind.

Pentecost means fiftieth day.  It is the day we call Whitsun in the Uk and comes fifty days after Easter Sunday.

Jesus told the disciples to wait in the city for the promised gift of the Holy Spirit.  So on the day of Pentecost which was the Jewish feast of fiirst fruits of the harvest and also a day when they commemorated the receiving the Ten commandments, the Apostles and others were together praying in the upper room.  Suddenly there was a sound like a mighty wind which filled the house and then what looked like tongues of fire appeared and settled on everyone and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in other tongues as the Holy Spirit. led.  This was the gift of the baptism of the Holy Spirit that Jesus had promised them just before he ascended into heaven.

Christians say that this was the birth of the christian church, there was cerainly a vast difference in the disciples afterwards.  The cowardly disciples who had run away or denied they were Christ's friends and were worried for there future became with the power of the Holy Spirit bold and fearless in telling everyone about Jesus.

Everyone has the Holy Spirit who comes to be with you the day you say yes to Jesus and you have the authority to ask and pray in Jesus' name, but when you have been baptised (filled, immersed) in the Holy Spirit you then have the anointing of power to go with the authority as well.  This experience seems to be the thing that releases God's supernatural gifts in you as well, which was very well demonstrated by the disciples after Pentecost when they preached with power and healed many individuals.  Today this same anointing with power is available to anyone who asks.

This and That and Living to Tell the Tale

Today i sat out in the garden with the sun shining and the birds singing the spring flowers blowing in the breeze and it was lovely.  The leaves are just coming out on my oak tree it has beaten nextdoors silver birch.

I looked on google earth the other day and there was our house complete with oak tree minus leaves.  It must have been from a year ago because our old car was outside our house.  The last time i looked our roads were blurred out but they must have got to us now.

Mum as predicted is frightened to go out to the supermarket again.  She thinks they have got her photo from her bus pass and will recognise her and follow her home.  Nothing we say is going to change her mind, so we will have to see if she goes to her club this Thursday to get her Easter egg.  Let's hope.

I think i will have to come back to this another time as i have had a visiter and now it is late.

But just to finish my twin g'son's came round the other day, it was their 16th birthday.  Where has the time gone?  It was lovely to see them though.  Although they don't live far away at their age they are usually busy with their own lives so we don't get to see much of them.  When they were born they were premature and like two little chickens but they  both tower over me now.  I think next time they come i will stand on my stool to kiss them goodbye :-)

My week

Got a phone call thursday from the local supermarket saying they had my mum there and she had just had her bag stolen.  So off we went to get her.  Obviously she was upset - she will be 83 on tuesday - and cross with herself for letting go of it just for a second as she turned to look at some veg.  Of course when she turned back it was gone from her trolley.  The supermarket was good and phoned us and the bank to stop her cards and then let her have her shopping for free.  As her keys and address was also in her bag she was worried about that night, but we had a friend from church who knew about locks and he came and changed them all straight away.  Thankfully as her short term memory is fading fast she cannot remember all she had that was personal to her in the bag to fret about it.  My husband only got 1 1/2 hours sleep that night before going to work (he is nights) and my sister had to take the next day off work to take mum to the bank, police etc.  Now we have to get a new bus pass tomorrow, but she is worried that they will be waiting for her in town as they have her old one with her photo on. No amount of telling her they are not interested in her only the money is going to change that.  Mum only goes out once a week to her club then on to the supermarket to get some food and a taxi home, we hope this doesn't put her off of going out altogether.

You know the little sounds that come up with the i m profiles, everytime someone presumably uses their i m.   Well....... there is a man's voice that comes up saying 'mum'.  It sounds just like my son.  So much so that when i first heard it my stomach turned over.  It was like my son was calling me and needed me and i couldn't get to him to help him.  I have got used to it now but i still find myself answering sometimes and saying, yea, what do you want? or Hi!.

How silly am i? :-)

Well i am about to start looking on here for a holiday once again.  I started a long while ago and then our holiday dates got muddled and now i am behind so i hope i can find something.  It does seem to take a long while even with the internet going through pages and pages looking for something.

So, wish me luck.

This and That

The sun is shining but the wind is  blowing and it is cold.  Every now and again black clouds come over and it rains for a few minutes then the sun is out again.

Granddaughter had the surprise of her life the other day.  I cannot go into here the background to this but my granddaughter has a grown up half sister and 2 half brothers on her Dad's side.  She has never seen her sister because the last time she had any connection with the family was when my grandkid was a baby.  It has always been grandkid's wish to meet her big sis.  Well without going into detail she turned up at my daughter's flat the other day without any warning.  Granddaughter and Sis just flew into each others arms with many tears and didn't put each other down for ages.  Next time she comes she might bring her brother to see grandkid.  For me i hope this is the beginning of a great realationship between the two.  My granddaughter could do with a big Sister to talk to.

Things have been busy around here as i am helping to put on a mission at our church and i have been busy making flyers and posters for the events we are having at the end of April.  Creativity is not something that comes natural to me, so it takes a lot of thinking about.  I was going to make a comment about the lovely pictures people put in their journals and how i wish i could make something like that but i am having a big senior moment and cannot think what you call them.  It will come back to me after i post this.

Last week i went to my daughter's church and listened to a swing band playing Glenn Miller and other jazzy things.  They also sang 'Barber Shop' as well.  It was a good night and the band was all made up of school kids of around 18yrs.  Shame they will be breaking up soon to go to Uni.

It's Mothering Sunday here today but nothing much is happening, not sure if that is good or bad.  I will have to think about that more.  It all became commercialised when people started calling it Mother's Day instead and forgot that it originally was a christian holiday to break the Lenten Fast, and the time when the girls in service would go back to their Mother church and visit their family with a simnal cake to show off what they had learned. Now it is just an excuse to double the price of flowers, chocolates etc. for a few days ripping off the young kids with their pocket money.

Son just came round with a card and some chocolates (perhaps i had better delete what i put above LOL!).  It was lovely to see him as i don't get to see him much, with 5 kids himself he is very busy, he had just come back from watching one of the twins at his football match.  To be quite honest the best present was to see him i could have done without the cards and chocies, but i will eat them anyway :-)

My life

Today is not a good day.  I have had a very stressful two weeks and it has taken its toll and now i am feeling ... anxious, shaky, blah!.   So i thought i would take a days holiday and just rest and re-group.  But that hasn't happened either.  Things have conspired to rob me of that as well.  So i have turned to God.  He has allowed this to happen so he must be trying to teach me something through it.  I know who is doing it, that old enemy, but God is allowing it.  I think i am understanding why, it is all to do with trusting him more and turning straight to him when there is trouble.  So i am saying to myself 'The Lord is my shepherd, i want for nothing.  He will lead me by still waters.  Amen.

My friend is having a similar problem, worried, anxious because her sister is in kidney failure.  Anything to take our minds off of what we should be doing which is setting up a mission fortnight to begin the end of April.  Someone is hoping we will be so stressed out and pre-occupied we will not be able to function properly.  Well it won't work!!!!

Apart from work which has been stock taking - hate it - nothing much has been happening.  Tomorrow i am going on a listening course, the first of two, which will last all day, then in the evening i am going to a jazz/big band night at my daughter's church.

I was sent one of those 4D scan pictures of my great grandson at 22 weeks.  It is very clear but i have to say they still look like little aliens.  I wonder what he will look like when he arrives?

Right i think i will go now in case i start babbling a lot of rubbish because i have nothing much to say.  American pop idol tonight.  Yay!!

My grandaughter

hi! i am the amazing grandaughter that my nan is always talking about!the girl who is the sister to the grandson who climbs up the old oak tree!i am 11 years old.

my writing is very confusin because my nan says i am not aloud to mension any names- annoying- but il live!

 anyway, i am usually at my dads of a weekend but for some reason i am not this weekend- thats why i am anxious-my mum will not tell me why!!! she is usually fighting for us to go to our dads of a weekend for her 'peace and time on her own' :)

i adore the computer and never get off of it! i am a computer-whizz. i usually write very non standerd english on the computer and very slang and shortening; im not sure my nan would aprove if i did that on her precious blog.he he!

i went to a school disco yesterday. it was a laugh. there is a new dj to what we usually have and this one was hilarious!much better than the old one, this bloke wore masks and wigs and things it was so funny!

i had a big shock yesterday towards the end of school, i had to leave early, it wasnt a very nice shock either.i cannot say what it was but it was nasty at the time. that is another reason why i am curious because i dont know the fall story of what happend.as you can imagine, i let my hair down for the disco to chear myself up a tad.

down to the last bit- embarrasment! my nan!she is the most embarrasing person i know!she realllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly shows me up in front of friends and public.if theres someone at the bus stop who shes seen there before, she'll say this is my grandaughter, my second youngest grandchild, her names #~*~# shes 11, shes da da da and so on! the worst thing is, she wears this stupid coloured patched hat which she claims is in fashion because its in the shops!not the one that she wears and the way she wears it.she looks awful in it! one last thing, when we go out shopping for her to buy me clothes, she says ' oh get that size, the next one up, you'll have some room to grow then wont you!' its so embarrasing, everyone looks! but i have to say, an embarrasing nan is much better than just a plain one, it would be exteremely boring without her!i adore her, i love her to pieces.i love my nan!i love you nanny xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx grandaughter xxxxxx thankyou people xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ps can i have some comments please! he he! xxxxxxxxxxxx

Teenage hooligans

Over the last week or so there has been a gang of teenagers hanging around my house and garden.  There has been fighting, argueing, shouting, running around and jumping.  The good thing is that it will all end in the next few months.  Last years baby magpies have become teenagers and they are doing what all teenagers do.

There are about a dozen of them constantly doing all of the things mentioned above.  What a noise they can make.

The funniest thing i saw the other day was when one was walking along and suddenly jumped up in the air about two and a half feet, land and then carry on walking again.

At the bottom of my garden i have a large wonderful oak tree that is always full of life.  This time of year the wood pigeons use it for their courting along with the collared doves.  They tend to stick to the middle of the tree.  The above mentioned maggies are constantly in and out as they cannot keep still at the moment.  Crows like to perch at the very top and look out at the world and blue tits, great tits and woodpeckers use it too.  Best of all is when you watch the squirrels running up and down playing and argueing with the MAGPIES.

The oak tree is one of the last trees to get its leaves so i have a good view of everything happening in it right up till late spring.  Blackbirds sing their songs from its branches and my grandson climbs it to the horror of his mum as he watches the world.

It keeps the rain off the kids toys and next doors shed.  It gives the infants from the next door school shade when they are outdoors in summer and provides them with leaves, nuts and insects to study.  It is a whole universe, complete in itself.  It does not need me to exist but i would a lesser person without it.

I LOVE MY OAK TREE!!!

Crazy e-mail

My daughter just sent me this by e-mail

Below are four (4) questions and a bonus question. You have to answer them instantly. You can't take your time, answer all of them immediately. OK?

Let's find out just how clever you really are....

Ready? GO!!! (scroll down)

First Question:

Y
ou are participating in a race. You overtake the second person. What position are you in?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Answer:
If you answered that you are first, then you are absolutely wrong! If you overtake the second person and you take his place, you are second!
Try not to screw up next time. Now answer the second question, but
don'ttake as much time as you took for the first question, OK?
Second Question:
I
f you overtake the last person, then you are...? (scroll down)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Answer:
If you answered that you are second to last, then you are wrong again. Tell me, how can you overtake the LAST person?

You're not very good at this, are you?

Third Question:

V
ery tricky arithmetic! Note: This must be done in your head only. Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it.

Take
1000and add 40to it. Now add another 1000. Now add 30. Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000. Now add 10. What is the total?

Scroll down for answer.....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Did you get
5000?
The correct answer is actually 4100.
If you don't believe it, check it with a calculator!  Today is definitely not your day, is it?  Maybe you'll get the last question right... Maybe.
Fourth Question:
Mary's father has five daughters: 1. Nana, 2. Nene, 3. Nini, 4. Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Did you Answer
Nunu? NO!Of course it isn't.
Her name is
Mary. Read the question again!

Okay, now the bonus round:

A
mute person goes into a shop and wants to buy a toothbrush. By imitating the action of brushing his teeth he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the purchase is done.
Next, a blind man comes into the shop who wants to buy a pair of sunglasses; how does HE indicate what he wants?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He just has to open his mouth and ask...
It's really very simple.
PASS TH
ABC
Thought i would give this a try although i cannot remember where i found it though as i put it into my test journal a while ago.
A     Apple or PC?
PC desk top and laptop
B     Banking... online or in person, and if in person, drive thru or inside the bank?
Online for me, hubby goes to bank or hole in wall.
C     Coffee and Chocolate!  The two most important 'C's  Favorites please.
Cadbury's  milk chocolate, cappachino coffee,  but not too often, caffeine not good for my blood pressure and not after 8.30pm or i will not sleep.
D     Dogs.  Do you have one?  If yes, what kind and it's name and why you named it that.  If no, then if you had one what kind would you choose?
No dog at the moment, had a toy poodle called Sam, just because it was a nice short name.  Then a huge labrador called Ben and another toy poodle, Tim.  Big Ben and tiny Tim.  The gerbil was Herb The Gerb, budgie was Budge, cat was Fluffy.  Very inventive names.
E     Elvis.  There was only one.  Favorite song, and if you ever or your parents ever, saw him live.
Although i admit he had a great voice, i have no albums of his and no favorite song, although i like Are You Lonesome Tonight, and no in the UK we never saw him live.
F   Flowers,  do you have a favorite to receive and/or favorite to give?
Roses, Lilies, Freesias.
G.   Grandparents, do you have any left and if you are one to, how many?
All mine have been dead awhile and it was only my maternal grandfather i never met.  Yes i am a grandmother to 7.
H     Handy or call for help?
I used to be handy with small things, i can change a plug, but now i don't have the strength in my hands due to arthritis.  For anything else....  why have a dog and bark yourself, if there's a man handy!!!
I     IOU's any out there to a person, a friend or family?
No, only the loving kindness shown to me.
J     Jello.  Love it?  Hate it?  Favorite flavor?  With whipped cream or cool whip or neither?
Just a like, but not had it for years.  No favorite flavour and probably best on its own.
K     Kiss.  Do you remember your first real kiss?  Where, who?
Not really, i don't remember a lot of the past and i am not a great lover of kissing either.  Too claustrophobic.
L     Language.  Do you speak any others?  Fluently or a little?
Tiny, tiny bit of school french.
M     Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck?
Not fussed about either.
N     Neighbors.  Do you know their names?  Occupations?  Phone numbers?  Or not?
Yes for the immediate neighbours, we have all lived here for over 30 or more years.  I also have a 'bus stop friend' of the lady who lives over the road, she is a recent neighbour and we have a small 'hail and ride' bus we get on together 3 days a week.
O     Olympics.  Do you watch?  Which is your favorite winter or summer?
I always watch both summer and winter olympics.  I love snooker and tennis too.
P     Pluto.  What is your take on the planet being downgraded?
On balance i would have kept it as a planet.
Q     Quiche.  Have you ever had it?  Do you like it and what is your favorite?
Are you kidding.  I'm a christian, how would we manage at any bring and share without the Quiche.  LOL.  The more that's in it the better i think.
R     Refrigerator.  Name three things in your refridgerator that you think are unusual.
I once put some socks i had bought my son in the fridge because they were in a similar bag to the cold meat.  I spent days looking for them then when i found them made him put them on cold to go to school in.  Bad mum.  The other unusual thing is that i have nothing growing mold in the fridge at the moment.
S     Safari.  Have you ever been to Africa on one?  A theme park version?
No,  but my friend has twice, does that count?
T     Telescope.  Have you ever looked thru a telescope?
Yes but only briefly, i would love one though.
U     Umbrella.  Do you have one and what is its design?
2 black ones, i need more.
V     Vintage.  Do you have a favorite wine to share?  Or drink?
I don't drink wine, only the odd shandy.
W     Willies.  What gives you the willies?  You know, that shudder you can't stop?
Spiders, earwigs.  Kids noses when they have a cold, and people who stick their fingers in the same place, yuck!
X     X-ray.  Last one?  What body part and why?
Mammogram 2 years ago when i was 53, one when i was 50, then when i was 14 on my ankle and a chest x-ray when i was 4 and had pneumonia.
Y     Yolk.  How do you like your eggs?
Anyway i get them but if there is a yolk then i prefer it soft.  I was brought up on fried eggs for breakfast along with cod liver oil.  It's probably why i have a good immune system.
Z     Zodiac.  What's your sign and does it fit your personality, in your opinion?
Scorpio.  The sex symbol with a sting in her tail.  Loyal to friends but don't cross her.  I don't do horoscopes but the only thing that is true to me is that i am loyal to friends.  Sex symbol, Ha ha.  I don't bear a grudge or seek revenge and i forgive easy.
