Pentecost

Someone has asked me what Pentecost is so i thought i would answer in a post for anyone else who doesn't know.  It got a bit like a bible study but never mind.

Pentecost means fiftieth day.  It is the day we call Whitsun in the Uk and comes fifty days after Easter Sunday.

Jesus told the disciples to wait in the city for the promised gift of the Holy Spirit.  So on the day of Pentecost which was the Jewish feast of fiirst fruits of the harvest and also a day when they commemorated the receiving the Ten commandments, the Apostles and others were together praying in the upper room.  Suddenly there was a sound like a mighty wind which filled the house and then what looked like tongues of fire appeared and settled on everyone and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in other tongues as the Holy Spirit. led.  This was the gift of the baptism of the Holy Spirit that Jesus had promised them just before he ascended into heaven.

Christians say that this was the birth of the christian church, there was cerainly a vast difference in the disciples afterwards.  The cowardly disciples who had run away or denied they were Christ's friends and were worried for there future became with the power of the Holy Spirit bold and fearless in telling everyone about Jesus.

Everyone has the Holy Spirit who comes to be with you the day you say yes to Jesus and you have the authority to ask and pray in Jesus' name, but when you have been baptised (filled, immersed) in the Holy Spirit you then have the anointing of power to go with the authority as well.  This experience seems to be the thing that releases God's supernatural gifts in you as well, which was very well demonstrated by the disciples after Pentecost when they preached with power and healed many individuals.  Today this same anointing with power is available to anyone who asks.

Hi Jenny! Thank you for your comment in my journal. Yes, it is Pentecost... an exciting season for the church. You explained it very well. The most impressive part I think is how the disciples were changed from being afraid to being bold and fearless for Jesus. I haven't asked to be annointed to preach or to heal. Is this something you do? I have gifts that I use to teach God's Word, and I want to do more with this gift. I am asking God to help me in this area. I'm pretty sure this is where He wants me. How can one be sure, though? Is it possible to know? Bea

A great entry!  Well explained.  To me the power and comfort of the Holy Spirit is the best part of belonging to Him, this side of Heaven.  -  Barbara
