This and that

My favourite time of year, 'Wimbledon'.  I don't think Federer will do it this year, or Murray, but we will see.  My other favourite sport is snooker.

Well we have had another death in the family, my hubby's much loved uncle has died.  We all (the family) sat round his bed all day Saturday until the evening when the machines were turned off.  He had no children of his own but was loved and respected by all the family and neighbours and to some of the nephews was very much a father figure.  He had gone to hospital the week before with bad stomach pains and during the operation to remove a mass they had found, it turned out to be worse than they thought.

He had bowel cancer plus a burst abcess.  They also found that it had spread to all his main organs and if he had come round from the operation he only had about 2 weeks more to live.  Thankfully he never came round and knew this, he went down to the operating theatre laughing and smiling and thinking he would soon be home.  Lets hope this will be the end of funerals for a while.  The problem is we are all getting older.

Changing the subject, i still haven't booked a holiday yet and i am getting a bit desperate.  Help!!  The g'kids are expecting to go somewhere so is my daughter.  I will have to really get down to looking.  The weather doesn't inspire me, one day hot the next cold.  I'm not so bothered if the weather is bad but the kids don't take too kindly to being shut in some strange place.  They always want to 'go somewhere' cos there 'bored'.  Trouble is if i find a place that is a reasonable price i wonder what is wrong with it that it hasn't been snapped up during the school holidays.  I think i shall just have to go for it and hope for the best.

I am still struggling with too many books.  I am trying hard to get rid of some to make room but i have just bought another lot.  I have little piles of them all over the place.  This is what happens when you work in a bookshop.  Still it keeps my friend in books to read whenshe is on holiday.  Some of my books have been all round the world.  Shame i couldn't go with them!!

I must make the most of it though as we are really struggling at work.  The internet is taking its toll on our takings.  Being a Christian bookshop it is a specialist shop.  You don't get passing trade, you come because you want something.  Unfortunately so many people and churches are buying on line now a lot of shops are suffering and are having to close.  Once lost we can never be replaced, shops cost too much and what a loss to the area.  We don't just sell books, but cd's, gifts, cards, childrens games etc. We also have a coffee shop area so people can meet their mates over a coffee or have a good look at the books before they buy.  Sounds like i am giving a sales pitch.  But seriuosly it will be a great loss to the community and i am too old to go looking for another job.

Going to go and get tea now and watch Murray playing his first match.

Sorry to hear about your uncle, but as you said, he was laughing and joking and he had no idea.  Cannot be a bad way, not that any way is good.  Shame about the shop, pity you cannot sell online as well and have the best of both worlds.  Maybe things will pick up.  I think even the internet is going to suffer now with ever rising prices like fuel and utilities and the credit crunch.  I think it is going to be a bad time all around.

Many shops have been hit hard with internet sales here too.  Hopefully you won't loose too many of your regular customers.  We had a small Christain book store in town and it lost sales and went out of business .  Now a BIG chain store is the only one around and that is at the Mall... not in our town area.  I do miss it.  Now I'm one that orders on line.  Sorry to hear of yet another death in the family.  Mine is the same as they are all getting older too.  Good luck on your holiday plans.  'On Ya' - ma

My sympathies to you and your family over the loss of your uncle. He was well loved. Good luck with the holiday planning... it's tough when there are kids. You want to do something they will enjoy, and usually, they will enjoy anything they have never done before. I'm sure just spending time with you will be a reward in itself. I hope your little bookshop doesn't have to close down... I enjoy browsing a bookstore... browsing the internet cannot compare. Even at Amazon.com you can only peak into a few of the book's pages. There is nothing as satisfying as turning the pages of a book, to find out if it is something you want.... or maybe you already know what you want... there are still so many other books just waiting to be opened and explored. In the old bookshops, there is the distinct smell of literature that you really can't find anywhere else. I still buy more books from the bookstores than from the internet because I am one who buys what I see and like. I don't think "Oh, I can go home and order this at Amazon.com." Maybe if I couldn't get around as well as I do now, I might consider ordering more from on-line, but for now, I am a true window shopper and book browser. Have a good week! bea

One of my dreams is to start my own bookshop, believe me I have enough to stock one, a world without books is almost a sin, but to be honest I do read them over and over always discovering some new aspect. I'm glued to the Tv watching Wimbledon one day I might make there, I also like snooker. Sorry to hear of your loss sending good thoughts and wishes.

Take care

Hi Jenny- first off, I'm sorry about your Husband's Uncle.  I had a wonderful Aunt who had stomach cancer which had spread by the time they knew.   It's good that your Uncle didn't suffer.  I hope you find a good spot for your vacation.  I'd try and suggest something, but I've never had the pleasure of getting to go to England, so I have no ideas for you ;-0
I guess I haven't read you long enough to know you work in a bookshop- but I guess you love books as much as I do, almost enough that I should have bought stock in a few publishing companies!  I do hope you still can get business.  It is handy to buy online, but it's so nice to be able to go into a shop, look aroundand read a little before buying.  God Bless you Jenny-  I'll keep you in my prayers~ Carolyn

I'm so sorry about your husband's uncle.
I would be doomed if I worked in a book store!  Or rather, my family would, because there'd be no room to move around in our house.  It's bad enough as it is!
